If you've ever finished a protein shake and felt gassy, heavy or bloated within an hour, you're in the majority. In a clinical study of 352 regular protein-supplement users, 68.5% reported digestive symptoms; bloating, gas, cramping, nausea which they attributed directly to their supplement. That isn't a rare reaction to a bad batch. It's the typical experience.

The useful question is why. And the honest answer is that there isn't one cause; there are two, and they work independently.
First, what "bloating" actually is
Bloating from a drink is usually fermentation. When something reaches your large intestine only partially digested, the bacteria living there break it down for you, and that process produces gas. Gas distends the gut wall, and that pressure is the bloated, heavy feeling.
Reason one - Lactose
Whey protein is made from the liquid left over from cheese production, and it comes in two main forms. Whey protein concentrate keeps most of the milk's natural composition, and with it, 1.2 to 2.3 grams of lactose per 30g serving. Whey protein isolate is filtered far more intensively, dropping lactose below 1g per 100g.
Here's the part that surprises people: being unable to fully digest lactose isn't a disorder, it's the human default. For roughly 68% of the world's adults, lactase production naturally declines after childhood.

Reason two - the additives
This is the cause almost nobody talks about, and it's why so many people switch products and still feel bloated. Many protein powders contain emulsifiers, gums, thickeners and synthetic sweeteners. A growing body of research links several of these to gut effects that are entirely independent of the protein source.

Same effect, whatever the protein
These effects don't matter whether a protein powder came from a cow or a pea. Xanthan gum ferments the same way in a plant-based shake as in a dairy one. The dairy problem can be removed by changing the protein; the additive problem can't, because it was never about the protein.
Why are these additives there at all?
The additives aren't arbitrary. They're almost always compensation for something the manufacturing process removed. We call it the compensation cascade.

How one decision creates a chain of additives
One ingredient gives the whole picture away: the emulsifier. Across our assessment of 64 brands, not a single top-tier (A or B) brand used an emulsifier or thickener. Xanthan gum appeared in 10 brands, every one in the lowest tier.
If you've already switched from whey to plant
You did the logical thing. You felt bloated on whey, read that plant protein is "gentler," and switched. For many people the bloating eased a little but didn't disappear, because you were told the problem was the dairy. Often, half of it was the additives, and those came along for the ride. The protein source changed. The formulation architecture didn't.
How to read a protein label for this
You don't need a nutrition degree, scan for two things:
- The protein source. "Concentrate" carries lactose; "isolate" carries far less but is more processed. Whole-food proteins (egg, bone broth) carry essentially none.
- The additives. Watch for emulsifiers and gums (xanthan gum, CMC, carrageenan, mono- and diglycerides) and synthetic sweeteners (sucralose, acesulfame K). "Natural flavouring" is worth noticing too, it's vaguer than it sounds.
How real food sidesteps both
When a shake is built from whole-food proteins instead of isolates, neither mechanism has much to act on. There's no concentrated lactose load, because the proteins aren't dairy concentrates. And there's nothing to compensate for, so the additive layer simply isn't needed.
